FLOUR MILL

My childhood memories..

My great-grandmother Vlastimila was born in 1910 and was the loveliest person I got to be around when I was a kid.

Her family had a flour mill, a huge property with a house attached to the old mill building. She lived downstairs in the house and then my grandfather built his own place above my great-grandmother and lived there with his family. That's where my mum was born.Next to this house was the mill. The old mill was a place we couldn't resist to explore when we were kids. There was a basement with coal heaters and a lot of wood. Then the other levels and parts of the mill were full of milling machines, old furniture or old goods the family didn't need anymore. There was one room with unstable floor we were not allowed to go, the floor could fall anytime. We always went there trying how far in the room can we go before we fall to the lower level through the old floor!

I loved being around my great-grandma. She fell in love with Jan, a boy from the village. Unfortunately Jan got very sick and passed away. She married his brother, Ladislav and that was also the father of my grandfather. She never stopped talking about Jan and how much she loved him. She told me stories about the mill as well, how they were secretly milling flour for people during the wars and I loved every single minute of being with this old lady. She was very small, her skin was amazingly wrinkled and she couldn't straighten her fingers. She said she saw T.G.Masaryk, the first President of Czechoslovakia (1918-35) when he traveled throughout the country. I wish she was still alive to tell me these and more stories again and again.

Anyway that was my prestory to what happened this morning. I have done this before but hadn't published. Bought some quinoa a brown rice and made my own flour. This is probably the best to use flour, to mill it on your own, as you know what is actually in it.

Quinoa and brown rice flour - two of many more Gluten-free Sourdough bread ingredients.
